Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Theodore Roosevelt served as U.S. Vice President in 1901 under William McKinley. On McKinley's assassination in September 1901, Theodore Roosevelt assumed the presidency. He acquired the Panama Canal Zone in 1903 and began construction of the canal. Established the United States Forest Service in 1905 and set aside millions of acres as national forests and parks. Earned the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War. Launched the "Great White Fleet" of American battleships, which demonstrated worldwide naval power in 1907.

During Theodore Roosevelt's early career, in 1895 he became president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In 1897-1898 Theodore Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In 1898 Theodore Roosevelt commanded the volunteer regiment known as the "Rough Riders" during the Spanish-American War. In 1899-1901 Served as Governor of New York.
